Seasonal Maintenance Worker - Multiple Positions (4 month or 6 month) - City of Newcastle ( Job # 18-0001)

Summary

The City of Newcastle is recruiting for multiple Seasonal Maintenance Workers, who will work four or six months in duration.  One position will begin as soon as possible, with the remaining positions starting in the Spring and working through the Summer.  This position works under the direction of the Infrastructure Maintenance Manager or designee and assists staff in performing regular/recurring semi-skilled maintenance tasks within Newcastle.  Duties will frequently be accomplished independently, with intermittent supervision and occasionally will work with other crew members.  Work will be performed in the outdoors, in all types of weather.  Typical hours will be Monday to Friday 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM, however may provide additional support at community events on nights or weekends.

Essential Job Functions
  • Maintain areas using weed eaters, walk behind mowers, chainsaws and power blowers.
  • Use shovel, pick, saw and other various hand and power tools on a regular basis.
  • Operate large trucks with the ability to pull a trailer.
  • Communicate effecitively with staff and public.
  • Follow directions to complete daily work projects - other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Education

Must be at least 18 years old, have a valid Washington State Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.  Applicants shall obtain the driver's abstract from www.dol.wa.org/driverslicense/requestyourrecord.html. Submit your driving abstract to: sarahj@newcastlewa.gov or mail to the City of Newcastle, Attn: Human Resources, 12835 Newcastle Way, Suite 200 - Newcastle, WA  98056.  Applications without a driver's abstract will be considered incomplete and will not move forward in the hiring process.  Final candidates are subject to a criminal history check and a city paid pre-employment testing which will include a physical and testing for alcohol and controlled substances.  

Education Required: High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.

 


Knowledge of:

  • Maintenance equipment and standard construction and repair methods, or ability to learn;
  • Work safety standards with various power equipment, hand tools and operating motor vehicles;
  • Safe operation of various small and large power equipment and hand tools; 
  • Cleaning methods and techniques of materials, supplies and equipment.

Ability to:

  • Work outdoors in inclement weather conditions;
  • See, drive, bend, kneel, stand, reach, climb, stoop, crawl, squat, push and twist;
  • Perform moderately medium to heavy manual labor;
  • Lift 50 pounds:
  • Work cooperatively with others and work independently;
  • Communicate effectively and follow written/oral instructions;
  • Interact professionally in a positive and cooperative manner with others.
