Join the team assisting the Solid Waste Division of Public Works!

This Intern will assist the Public Works Solid Waste and Recycling staff members in the implementation and coordination of the EnviroStars Regional Green Business Program, thereby providing the Green Business Intern the opportunity to learn skills related to marketing and promotion; customer service and engagement; business communication and business recruitment.  The internship is anticipated to run for 6-9 months at 20 hours per week.


Assists the Public Works Solid Waste Division in performing a variety of current and short-term tasks in the development, implementation, and promotion of the EnviroStars Regional Green Business Program.


  • Make phone calls and site visits to businesses to recruit new members
  • Onboard existing members of the Kirkland Green Business to the new EnviroStars Program
  • Assist businesses complete applications and navigate website
  • Track business contacts and assistance
  • Review membership applications
  • Conduct business site visits to verify application check-lists
  • Presence at events promoting the EnviroStars Green Business Program
  • Assist with the production of social media content
  • Assist with planning a business recruitment strategy
  • Assist with the design or distribution of marketing materials
  • Attend  periodic program committee meetings
  • Reporting on business recruitment results and strategies


  • Represent the Solid Waste Division at public functions and community events
  • Assist in the development of education and outreach materials

  • Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
    1. Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively, both verbally and in writing.  Must possess excellent organizational, verbal, and written skills. Must be comfortable phoning and visiting businesses in person.
    2. Ability to organize and prioritize workload, with minimal assistance from Solid Waste staff.
    3. Experience in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software.
    4. Ability to deal effectively with the public, especially business owners and employees.
    Hours of Work

    To be mutually agreed upon at time of job offer.     Work days/hours are flexible, depending upon student class schedule.   Up to 20 hours/week available.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program, majoring in Public Administration, Business Administration, Environmental Studies, Marketing, Communications or a closely related field. Possession of a valid Washington State Driver’s License or the ability to secure a reasonable transportation accommodation to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. Must have excellent oral and written communications skills.

    Working Conditions & Physical Activities

    Work will be performed in an office setting (City Hall) and in the field. In the office, long periods of time may be spent sitting. Occasionally, work may be at a computer terminal for several hours at a time. Must be able to walk, climb, bend, and stoop to complete tasks. This position is required to attend occasional night or weekend meetings or events, as directed.
