The City of Kenmore is seeking 3-4 seasonal maintenance workers for the summer.  Under the direction of the Public Works Operations Manager, these positions will be required to perform a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and repair tasks with in a specific area of the Public Works Department.  Other duties include general grounds maintenance such as preparation of walking trails and fields at assigned city and parks sites, or basic maintenance tasks in City rights-of-ways including vegetation control, asphalt, concrete, gravel, and drainage repairs.  Also includes operating a range of small powered and specialized equipment and providing support for special events.  Duties of similar complexity in other maintenance areas may be required or assigned.

Because of the small size of city staff, each staff member is expected to perform a wide range of field duties as may be required from time to time.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs a variety of routine unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the area of assignment.
  • Assists with routine maintenance of City infrastructure to include streets, surface water, parks, grounds and facilities as assigned; duties will vary according to job assignment.
  • Maintains landscaping, mows lawns, trims hedges, picks up trash, clears brush, weeds and removes debris;
  • Cleans and maintains park restrooms and other parks facilities.
  • Operate a variety of equipment, hand and power tools;
  • Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; recognizes and reports safety hazards, traffic problems, equipment problems and emergency situations.
  • Completes work according to specific work orders.
  • Completes required daily logs, timesheets and reports.
  • Picks up and delivers equipment, materials, parts and supplies as required.
  • Ensures regular, predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • City policies and procedures.
  • Applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Materials, tools and equipment used in performing landscape maintenance.
  • Learn general principles of landscape and walking trail maintenance, including turf, shrubs, and trees commonly used in parks.
  • Learn general principles of right-of-way maintenance including concrete, asphalt, drainage repairs and vegetation control.
  • Identify work hazards and practice general safety procedures.
  • Learn basic cleaning methods, procedures and techniques with knowledge of materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Work independently without direct supervision in the field.
  • Safely operate light-duty trucks, hand mowers and a variety of hand tools used in park maintenance.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds and perform a variety of physical tasks and heavy labor.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Duties are performed in both indoor and outdoor work environments at construction sites, facilities, right of ways, streets and parks which will require exposure to varying weather and terrain conditions, noise, dust, mud, moving vehicles or machines, chemical cleaning agents and toxic odors.

  • Outside work requires operation of motorized vehicle to perform work.
  • Perform a variety of semi- skilled building and grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Position is subject to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays during special events.
  • Requires hearing and speaking to exchange information.
  • Requires dexterity of hand and finger movement to operation keyboard and drafting materials; visual acuity at 20 inches or less; and hearing acuity for speech discrimination.
  • Standing or walking for extended periods of time.
  • Climbing ladders and working from heights.
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
  • Must have the physical ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Perform moderately medium to heavy manual activities.
  • Duties are frequently performed working along, but may sometimes be performed as part of a work team.  Conditions at work sites may include falling objects, loose footings, loud noises, construction equipment, and work in the right-of-way, traffic, or roadways.
Education and Experience

This position requires a High School diploma or GED equivalent.  Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the applicate with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job.  Ability and interest in outdoor park maintenance work in all types of weather.  Experience in maintenance or other related work preferred.

Licenses and Certificates

Must be 18 years or older and possess a valid Washington State driver’s license.  A good driving record is required.
